about

Low Bridge, Everybody Down (Roud 6598; Ballad Index San171; Mudcat 112909) was written in 1905 by Thomas S. Allen (although this is desputed) about the change from mule power to engine after the construction of the New York State Barge Canal. The Erie Canal began construction in 1817 and opened in 1825.

Michael learned this song in his elementary school music class. Ben learned it from Pete Seeger's 1961 recording "American Favorite Ballads, Vol. 4".
